Vocational Education

Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) provides skill-based learning and focuses on how to teach practical skills. This means that upon completion of the program a student has gained the necessary knowledge and hands-on skills needed to perform specific tasks of an occupation.

We work across all areas of vocational education and assessment, both workplace/apprenticeship and college learning, including generic adult education (literacy, numeracy, digital skills, life skills) and trades and professions, developing programmes of learning assessment that reflect the needs of 21st Century learners.

Qualification design and development

AlphaPlus has extensive experience in qualification design and development across a wide range of vocational disciplines. Over recent years, we have developed over 150 NOS and 150 Qualifications. We support around 40 certification bodies in assessment design, deployment of digitally-enabled assessment, regulatory compliance and business strategy. In addition to these delivery projects, we also work with government and regulators, supporting vocational education reform across several countries worldwide.

Functional skills

Functional skills are practical skills in English, mathematics, and ICT that allow individuals to engage confidently, effectively and independently in life. They are used to recognise performance in vocational and workplace certifications (apprenticeships, T levels, etc.) and are equivalent in level to the GCSEs taken (largely) in schools. AlphaPlus has worked for nearly two decades on these qualifications and their predecessors. Examples of our work in this important curriculum area include:

Delivery of the tests and analysis underpinning national surveys of adult literacy and numeracy in 2003 and 2012 https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/2011-skills-for-life-survey
Delivery of large volumes of nationally regulated assessments for awarding bodies (for example: https://www.ncfe.org.uk/functional-skills).
National evaluation of the Functional Skills Pilot (for DFE and QCA).

Creation (for DFE) of the Essential Digital Skills Framework (this is the new specification of skills of competency in everyday digital skills). Creation of reference content for Essential Digital Skills (for Ofqual) and tests for certification bodies (for example, NCFE – see above)
